Snowflake Obsidian is Black Obsidian with small white inclusions of the mineral Cristobalite, giving the stone the spotted white effect on the glassy black stone surface.  Cristobalite, like Black Obsidian, is formed at very high temperatures during volcanic activity.  Cristobalite has the same material components as quartz, but a different chemical structure making it a completely different mineral.

Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that has been used by prehistoric man by fashioning into tools, primarily weapons.  The association with Black Obsidian as a protective weapon is more than symbolic if you can make the connection with your stone as part of your energetic defence toolkit.  Black Obsidian is a highly energetic stone, yet grounding, being associated with your root chakra.  Black Obsidian can provide comfort in times of high stress and allow you to see things more clearly.
