Jet is of organic origin and not a mineral or stone at all.  Jet is a Lignite, and is similar to coal but the formation process is different.  Jet is created when wood based material is covered in waterlogged sediment and is compressed and heated over time.  Accordingly Jet is very light, only weighing roughly half the weight of Agate at the same size.  Jet is found in several places worldwide including England, Spain, Germany, China and Turkey.  This particular specimen is from Spain.

Jet is associated with your base chakra and accordingly basic human existence, survival and security.  The term 'jet black' is a reference to the darkness of Jet, which has been associated with grief and mourning over the course of human history; specifically with reference to the notion that Jet can draw out unwanted energy and dispel negativity.  Jet is a grounding, protective stone, and in deep meditative practice capable of supporting you through existential matters and the loss of a loved one.
