Stromatolite Fossil Skull [1k1262]

Stromatolite is from the Stromatolite structure (a special type of microbial reef) which is a build up, and layering of sedimentary material over time in the presence of photosynthesising (oxygen releasing) bacteria.  Stromatolites are evidence of the earliest forms of life on earth, with active bacteria resembling the bacteria of some 3.5 billion years ago.  The stromatolite structure is built up with the layering sediment very slowly over time.  A one metre structure may be as old as 3000 years.  The remaining clearly defined stromatolite natural areas worldwide are limited to the Hamelin Pool Marine Reserve in Shark Bay, Western Australia and along the Exuma Sound in The Bahamas.
